THE MARIAN MYSTERY: OUTLINE OF A MARIOLOGY

A major new work outlining the development of Catholic doctrine regarding the Blessed Virgin Mary. It begins with a biblical and patristic enquiry into the place and meaning of Mary in salvation history, with reference to the Hebrew Scriptures. The writings of key patristic figures including Origen, Athanasius and Ambrose are treated. The key contributions of the Eastern Churches are outlined. Issues raised by the Protestant Reformation are also considered. The doctrines of the Immaculate Conception and Mary’s Assumption into heaven are thoroughly treated along with her role as Mother of the Church. The contribution of Vatican II to Mariology is presented along with a critique of some modern speculative theology about Mary.
